Prayers of the Faithful
**Sunday Mass at 10 AM at Sacred Heart is supported by an ASL Interpreter.
–Rest in Peace We pray for Eric Hasenkamp, who died this past week. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, June 13th at 11 AM at Our Lady of Fatima.
–Summer Office Hours
Starting the week of June 8th, parish staff will have limited public office hours as we undertake some summer projects and planning. Office hours will be from 10am to 3pm, Monday through Thursday. Outside of those hours, we may not be available to answer the phone or the door. You are welcome to leave a message or set up an appointment by phone or email. Sacred Heart in-person meetings continue to be by appointment only. The offices will be closed on Friday, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.
–Summer Mass Time Change
During the summer months, the St. Anne Thursday morning Mass will move to the evening. Join us at 5:30 pm, beginning June 11th.
On June 8, our pastor will be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood! If you would like to send Fr. Freitag a message of congratulations, we have set up an online form. In lieu of gifts, there is also a fund set up through the form to make donations in his honor, which will go towards clergy vestments for the parish family. (Please note that this is separate from the suggested ACA rebate projects around liturgy items.)
We will recognize this achievement with refreshments after the following Masses:
Saturday, June 6 at 5pm at Our Lady of Fatima
Sunday, June 7 at 10am at Sacred Heart of Jesus
Sunday, June 14 at 11am at St. Anne
God bless our graduates! We are so proud of all you have accomplished and wish you all the best as you move on to high school. Thank you to the parents for all your love and support. Enjoy the summer break!
–Livestream of the Consecration of the US to the Sacred Heart
Watch the livestream on Thursday, June 11, at 1pm Pacific Time on the USCCB’s YouTube channel.
The feast day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is on Friday, June 12th. Please join us at Sacred Heart of Jesus for Mass at noon. This is the day after the Consecration of the US to the Sacred Heart, which will begin a year–across the US and the Archdiocese–of learning about and encouraging a devotion to the Sacred Heart. It can be as simple as praying the Morning Offering:
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation for sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Amen
The Encyclical from Pope Leo XIV was published just over a week ago and there is a wealth of sources–from articles to videos to podcasts–offering commentary. We will continue to share resources that we hope will be of interest. The following is a quote from “What the pope’s new encyclical on AI Is asking of you” by Charlie Camosy. The full article is available on the Northwest Catholic website.
But what, specifically, is Leo asking of us?
First, he is channeling his inner St. John Paul II in urging us not to be afraid in spreading the good news in the midst of the AI revolution. “I encourage all members of the Church not to be afraid of the present challenges,” the Holy Father says. The truth which the Church has to offer at this historical moment “is a gift to be shared” with the world.
Second, he is asking us to begin with ourselves. The encyclical returns repeatedly to the following question: Does this technology “make human life on earth ‘more human’ in every aspect of that life? Does it make it more worthy of man?” That question, first, is a personal one. How am I using AI in my own life? What habits is it building or eroding in me? Am I using it in ways that deepen my attention and my relationships, or in ways that outsource my judgment and thin out my humanity? We must evangelize ourselves before we bring this message to the world.
Third, he is asking us to get to work. The biblical image Leo returns to again and again is Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem: Everyone is given their own section. Scientists and researchers. Entrepreneurs and workers. Educators and legislators. Faith communities. Each in their own field, doing what is in them to do.
Perhaps you are being called to organize a labor union for workers in your school or hospital? Especially if you work in a Catholic institution, perhaps you are being called to ask, right now, whether anyone has evaluated the AI tools your institution is adopting, and against what criteria. The encyclical gives you both the standing and the obligation to ask that question. If no one is asking it, then this may be your section of the wall to get started on.
Leo writes: “The civilization of love will not arise from a single or spectacular gesture, but from the sum total of small and steadfast acts of fidelity.”
We have our marching orders. Time to get to work.
The synthesis of the second listening session, which was held February 28th, “What Opportunities and Challenges Exist for Us?” is now available online. All Listening Session synopses are available on our website.
