St. Anne History
1908-1939: Founding the Parish
In the early 1900s, Queen Anne Hill Catholics were part of Sacred Heart Parish but wanted their own parish. Bishop O’Dea appointed Fr. Patrick Byrne to establish St. Anne Parish. Fr. Joseph Chapotan took over and built the church, dedicated on December 20, 1908. The parish grew with Seattle, facing challenges like the Great Depression. Fr. Thomas P. Quain led the parish through these times, building a school and a convent for the Holy Names Sisters.
1940-1970: War, Growth, and a New Church
During WWII, St. Anne Parish adapted to the changes. Fr. Quain provided strong leadership. The parish needed a new church, and Fr. Bernard Cremer led a successful campaign to build it, dedicated in 1963. The Second Vatican Council brought significant changes to Catholic practices.
1980-2008: Change, Growth, and Renovation
The 1980s began with the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, mirroring Seattle’s explosive growth driven by Boeing and Microsoft. St. Anne Parish faced rapid changes and a series of pastors. Fr. Bob Camuso brought stability and led a major renovation campaign, modernizing the church, school, and building a new parish hall.
Fr. Bob also started a Catholic radio program, but his reassignment led to new leadership. Sister Marilyn Geiger and Ron Ryan continued the renovation efforts, raising funds to update the church and reduce debt.
In 2005, Archbishop Alex Brunett appointed a lay pastoral coordinator, with Fr. Paul Pluth as parochial vicar. By 2008, Fr. John Bowman took over, and the parish celebrated its centennial with a newly renovated church. The renovations included a new roof, skylights, a nursery, and a beautiful baptismal font. The centennial celebration was a significant milestone, marking the parish’s resilience and growth.
