Sacred Heart of Jesus History

1889 - 1899

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church boasts a rich history as one of Seattle’s oldest parishes. Established by Bishop Aegedius Junger in 1889, the Redemptorists formally took charge of the parish and the Sacred Heart Elementary School opened in 1891. The school was first staffed by the Dominican Sisters of Tacoma and later by the Sisters of Holy Names. The original church building stood at 6th and Bell before weathering a defining moment in 1899 – a devastating fire that completely destroyed the original structure.

1900 - 1929

The cornerstone for the rebuilt church was laid in 1899 and commemorated by Bishop O’Dea. This new building, dedicated in 1900, stands as a testament to the resilience of the parish community. The early 20th century saw significant growth for the parish. The activation of the St. Vincent de Paul Conference in 1923 further solidified the church’s role as a cornerstone of the community, providing charitable services to those in need. In 1927 and 1928, the parish broke ground on a new school and chapel at Warren Ave & John St, and the Sisters’ Convent at Warren Ave & Thomas St.

1930 - 1959

The fruits of the parish were on display with the ordination of the first Redemptorists priests from the parish – Fathers Vincent and Vickstrom. Another son of the parish – Father Richard Ochiltree, also a Redemtorist – celebrated his first Mass in 1953. The post-war era also brought new challenges. In 1958, the World’s Fair Committee threatened the church’s very existence through land condemnation. Fortunately, Sacred Heart prevailed in a legal battle, securing its location.

1960 - 1989

The latter half of the 20th century witnessed a shift in focus for the parish. Archbishop Connoly blessed the cornerstone of the current church in 1960 and while the school closed in 1969 and the convent in 1972, Sacred Heart continued to serve the community. The former convent became a shelter operated by Catholic Community Services, demonstrating the parish’s enduring commitment to social justice. The 1980s saw the launch of the parish food bank, now known as the Queen Anne Food Bank, ensuring continued support for the vulnerable. The 2000s brought further innovation with the establishment of a Young Adult Ministry and the housing of a homeless shelter in the former school building. In 1989, Sacred Heart celebrated 100 years of ministry in Seattle.

1990 - Present

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church has weathered storms, adapted to changing needs, and remained a vital center of faith and service for over 130 years. Restoration of the church, school, and rectory buildings began in 2002 and the consecration of the church altar and the John Paul II Adoration Chapel in 2010 speaks to the parish’s enduring commitment to its spiritual mission. As Sacred Heart enters its next chapter, its rich history serves as a powerful testament to the strength and dedication of its community.
